Spud Webb laughs in your general direction...

blast from the past... @SerenityNigh
The fact that two separate posts referenced the same not tall person as an example of someone not tall playing at the top level of basketball makes exactly the opposite point.

Yes there are the occasional exception to the rule, but more often than not if you aren't 6'0 as an absolute minimum you won't be making it to the NBA. The game is set up for tall players to play at the elite level. This is unique but not really a unique concept as other sports set up for certain body types as well (there aren't a ton of lean guys in the NFL, for example). Personally I don't see that as a negative or a reason to not play the sport casually.

There is a statistic that if you are an American and your height is between 6'6 and 6'8 there is a 0.07% chance that you are a pro NBA player, but if you happen to be 7'0 or taller you have a 17% statistical chance of being a pro NBA player.

So any "freakishly tall" person has a physique that lends itself very well to the game. I would be amazed if there were any other sport that could produce that sort of statistic. Yes, Rubgy players tend to be stockier, Jockies tend to be midgets, but just by dint of being stocky or shortarse doesn't give you a huge jump in your chances of being a professional in those sports as it seems to do with basketball.

Sorta' familiar...did he rock a flat top, like there was a mesa on his head? And look at those Reebok pumps (I think)!

Garbage stat. There are 15 or so 7 footers in the NBA this year, about 6 are Yanks.

I know he said it as an American, but I believe the stat is wrong. The 17% is correct, but I believed it includes all nationalities and all professional basketball. So not just NBA pros, some 7 footer being paid to play in Mongolia is included as a professional. Also your earlier post abot Kornheiser was great, that guy is hilarious.
