If you think American beer is bad you are missing out. The large mass production brewers create horrible beer, but the US creating lots of good beer. There are around 2500 craft breweries in the US right now, not counting the big brewers that create the swill. Tons of awesome beer here, unfortunately most doesnt get outside the US. Partly because the large breweries basically have a monopoly and control most of the distribution, trying to squeeze out the craft brewery competition.
This.
And while drinking has decreased overall the last couple years, craft breweries have continued to expand, breaking 5% of the US Market.
They do extend outside the US, but are rare and expensive. Amsterdam actually has a bar, Beer Temple, devoted to our beers... sadly my dutch buddy pays more for a bottle of one of our beers than I will a sixer here.
And more and more of our big breweies are jumping in the game, either buying out craft brewers, or distributing them. A friend works for A-B distributing in Southern Arizona. Gave me a "gift box" consisting of nothing but craft beer... Red Hook, Sierra Nevada, Kona, Odells... as well as Bass traditional and stout. They've found a way to make money off the movement, which could benefit them, the craft breweries, as well as us drinkers.
