Why are local newspapers so completely s**te?

Local newspapers are either a list of murder and criminal mayhem or else a propaganda exercise for the council. I live in Greenwich in London and the paper here is just page after page of kids in judo outfits holding trophies. Haven't looked at the Echo for a long while but it always made me suicidal after reading it. Local papers Y U SO S**TE?

arent the national ones worse? at least the local ones might be able to use the word `news`- the nationals are gossip sheets `cept the broadsheet ones

Problem is now many local papers have suffered from massive cost cutting and as a result are having to cope with less and less staff trying to cover the work load, I do free lance work for some of the local papers and things have changed so much in the last few years just to cut costs. Most seem to be run thru one large paper over seeing smaller towns, as a result its all advertising and estate agents lists. Our paper seems to have such a small news section its sad to see, even worse to actually work for now
