I've spent a long time reading these forums but never bothered to post(Ive spent too much time on sports forums as it is...). As an american, I can definitely say that now Howard has left, it doesnt mean a thing except we need a new keeper. American fans who are bandwagon jumpers follow Liverpool. American fans who are the more "stable" variety are more likely to be Everton fans, and arent going anywhere.
I became an Everton fan maybe about 8 years ago. Being big into soccer(hey, you brits named it that first, your fault), I was looking for a team to support in the EPL. The problem is, I've always been a supporter of teams close to home. EPL teams arent close to home. So for years I struggled to find one. For one misguided season I rooted for Man U, because I liked their style of play. But because of my background, I could never root for a team that was already good, it would always bother me to be a bandwagon fan, so I needed a bigger reason. See, in the USA you have a mix of fans. You have the fans that are all fiercely loyal to their hometown. And you have fans that just look for the best team and follow that, the bandwagon fans. We look down on them...Around here, many of the bandwagon fans follow the Pittsburgh Steelers in the NFL, and its pretty obnoxious. Interestingly, those same fans, if they do follow EPL football, follow Liverpool. So automatically I couldnt stand them. So I started following Everton, because of Timmy Howard, and Landon Donovan. It became clear quite quickly that Everton was a perfect fit. Everton reminded me of my two favorite sports teams in the USA. It was scary actually...
See my two favorite teams, the teams I had been rabid about for 25 years here are the Washington Redskins and the Baltimore Orioles. Both of those teams were once the bests in their leagues(in the mid 80's). They once dominated. They have some of the greatest histories and traditions in their leagues, and the most loyal fanbases. Both are my local teams, so they just happened to be so similar. But they both also had another thing in common, they both had been miserable failures in recent years, major disappointments, had poor management, and despite all of their great history, a disappointing product on the field. You felt like you might be cursed to support them, but you had to, it was in your blood. Every year though, like masochists, I and the other fans would hope anew, look back to the glory days, and think it can be like that again.
So which team in the EPL most fit a long great history and tradition, used to dominate the league in the mid 80's, has been disappointing recently, suffered poor management, and despite all of that you think you must be a masochist to support, but you have to, you just have to?
Everton. Im doomed.

This thread pisses me off on so many levels. I am an American 'fan', as you put it, and have been with Everton through some pretty crap times and never left. I never got to experience the glory days of winning titles in the 80s. I have spent thousands of dollars to come watch the Blues in Liverpool. I have spent countless weekends waking up hungover at 6am to watch some of the drivel we have trotted out on the pitch. And i continually get crap from my friends who support the "top four". But I have never wavered. I will be a Toffee forever. So take your condescending crap and shove it.
I think the best way to solve this issue is buy Jozy Altidore to replace Lukaku.
U S A U S A U S A
Yet here you are. Fascinating.I,ve already moved on.
