Who Starts For England?

He was poor though mate. Not entirely his fault though I grant you.

Wouldn't drop him for Shaw in a million years though.

No he didn't help himself but it would have been an average performance at worst had Rooney given him more cover, I think.

Also, I don't understand all this talk about Rooney playing the #10 role. For me if he's going to play he should be the striker. If not then leave him on the bench.

Why can't we just play with 2 strikers? Bloody football.

True. But he would've still struggled. I cant remember a game when Cole had to deal with 2 on 1 attacks. Dealing with some of the best wingers in the world one on one, no problem. Add a very good fullback doubling up, anyone would struggle.

Rooney touched the ball twice in our half near Baines. Twice. That's shocking to me.
Not in an England shirt but in the chelsea Everton game at Goodison last seaon we had a lot of joy down the right hand side as the winger (Hazard I think) didn't provide cover and Cole was caught out quite a bit by Naismith/Coleman on the break, especially as he has lost quite a bit of pace. He got so frustrated he started getting really wound up and threw away the ball at one point - Terry had to sweettalk Webb to avoid him getting a yellow. Our goal eventually came from that side as well and Cole got taken off when they were searching for a goal.

Shaw is a lesser version of Baines. The same thing would have happened, only worse.

Its a pity because Baines was hung out to dry, couldn't even show what he could do offensively the other day.

Actually the only player I saw in a while who can handle a left flank all by himself was Lescott in his pomp.

Gota be honest and not being biased here but whilst watching the England game I never thought for one minute "oh Baines is having a nightmare here".... I did think "my god were getting murdered down that side"....but it was obvious for anyone to see that wasn't the left backs own personal performance that was the cause!

I heard one pundit saying A.Cole should of gone because he would of shouted at Rooney to fill in? Pretty sure I saw plenty of Baines asking Rooney for help, which not being his posistion, Rooney was just totally out of his depth (defensively) in that role.

AND why has Gerrard not been questioned for his lack of cover over that side?

And as much as my personal opinion is that Cole should of gone instead of shaw (Incase of injury to Baines OR to play RB)....

Can u imagine the press now! They would be asking for him starting instead of Baines this next game. Clueless bunch!!

It was both for mate.

Baines was left out so often with two boss Italian lads rinsing him over and over. He needed support. Didn't get it.

But even when it was 1-1 he was poor.

Martinez (not shockingly) said it best in that England don't play to Baines' strength. But then why would they?!

Anyway, the team on Thursday will be the same but with Rooney in the middle.

To be fair, if you play the system england played it should be the holding midfielders who cover the full backs. T h ere was to much interchanging of positions going on upfront to give one player the defensive cover responsibility.

Hit the nail on the head with this comment mate. Gerrard and Henderson had absolute stinkers, and they're getting away with it.

The front four in that game were all players with very little defensive ability whatsoever, and the two fullbacks are both very pacy with a lot of attacking capability - it makes sense even more when you consider how far off of the Italian midfield our two CMs were sat: they were both perfectly positioned to help cover the fullbacks, but Gerrard in particular offered no assistance whatsoever. Anyone judging Baines's performance critically, but ignoring the fact he was covering two and sometimes three attackers, is a melon. Baines did not have a bad game at all - Italy hammered away at our left flank and because of Baines they only won by one goal. Make no mistake, had Shaw been playing without any cover, Italy would have scored more from that same flank.

We had the same problem on our right, the only reason the left is being hilighted is the Italians were better on that side. Both our full backs were exposed by poor covering by the holding pair.
