Knocking on wood for good luck ?
Apparently
In many cultures, it's a common superstition for people to knock their knuckles on a piece of wood to bring themselves good fortune or ward off bad luck. ... One common explanation traces the phenomenon to ancient pagan cultures such as the Celts, who believed that spirits and gods resided in trees
Hence the Yule log is still a tradition during the Christian Christmas period as well decorating trees (mistletoe)
These are indigenous and pre-Christian religions and traditions that would not be subjugated by the new religions coming into the British isles.

I have heard of the white rabbit one but I don't bother because a) I never remember, b) its a load of old crap, c) anyone who has seen Monty Pythons Holy Grail will know just how evil white rabbits can be and d) I'm not a full blown hippy

I will admit to the following:

I won't walk under scaffolding, I salute magpies, I don't put new shoes on the table (Why anyone would put hoes on a table is a mystery to me anyway) .... Thats it. None of it works.
You salute magpies but you aren’t a full blown hippie ?
