Italia 1990 for me although USA 1994 wouldn't be too far behind either. In that 1990 World Cup, we had Ireland achieving it's best ever result in an international tournament. That Ireland team only scored two goals from play though, and didn't actually win a game in normal play, but that penalty shoot out win over Romania was very memorable.

It was heart break for England against Germany in the semi finals, Gazzas tears and all that! USA 1994 was special as well, we had Ireland beating Italy in Giants Stadium, and Romania with Gheorghe Hagi and Bulgaria with Hristo Stoichkov had boss sides as well.

Italia 1990 is number one for me though. The final was a very boring affair by all accounts but i love that 1990 Germany shirt. 1990 and 1994 were the last world cups, before football really started to change for the worse imo.

Only old enough to remember from France ‘98.

But loved 1998, that was magically. Had a banging summer I seem to recall.

2002 was great for the novel aspect. Just remember going the boozer at like 8am and everyone being hammered ?

2006 was a good one too, felt Germany always host a good tournament.. looking forward to 2024 already.

2010 was a nightmare, the bloody Vuvuzelas.

2014, I feel stated off amazingly, Van Persie/Cahill was just an example. Everyone I know who went was fuming because it was freezing cold.

2018, everyone I know says it’s the best they’ve done. I personally really enjoyed it. Thought it was very enjoyable, we’ll set up, and quirky in some of the stadia designs.

But France ‘98 wins for me.

I watched but dont really remember 1970 and I remember 1974 with Cruyff, Holland, and my all time favourite Riverlino but I also remember it rained (alot)

I think 1978-1990 were all great World Cups but if I had to pick one of those it would be 1982. USA 1994 was the start of the decline for me

Someone said to me the best world cups are more to do with your age than the standard of the competition and I think they're right. The best World Cups are the one's you can remember whilst you are still under 25 (ish)

After that sort of age the magic isn't quite the same

I have amazing memories of 2018, was generally a fantastic summer and this would be my pick too. Though Italia 90 has some of my first ever memories, and some of them were very good ones

I named Italia 1990 and USA 1994 as my two favourites, but France 1998 and Japan/South Korea 2002 were memorable and enjoyable as well.

I found the tournaments after that, to be a bit less enjoyable so yeah i agree with you. You do look back with most fondness on the World Cups, from a time period when life was more straightforward and innocent imo.

1990 properly sparked my interest in footie. I was only a kid, so easily got swept up in the excitement. Having watched games back, the quality was not amazing at times. But it dud enough to get me out kicking a ball at every opportunity, same as the kids in my neighbourhood.

94 was cool, loved the Bulgarian, Romanian and Swedish teams being real dark horses. It also gave the world Alexi Lalas, lol. Columbia the biggest overhyped disappointment.

2014 was another I really enjoyed. Brazil getting trounced at home in the semi was unforgettable.
