Where have all the good bands gone?

The new Sleater-Kinney single was better than the last album for sure, but still disappointing to me.

Carrie Brownstein has really scored an own goal here. I think this pop turn of hers the last few years would have been better realized as a side project instead of driving away S-K’s drummer and a lot of their fans.

Long time fan of Sleater-Kinney, and I agree with all this as well.

Nail on the head here regarding S-K. The loss of Weiss was huge, and unlike you I do not really like the new single.
The last album sounded like a totally different band. The single sounds like another band covering a S-K song. So it’s better, but still not the same.

Starting a band is a lot more expensive and takes more effort than just plugging a midi keyboard into your laptop and producing music on GarageBand and Ableton. It also saves you the trouble of having to collaborate with others that might be pulling in different directions etc

The live music scene isn't what it was either and probably makes it difficult for emerging bands to build a following and gain a foothold in the industry. Which is a shame, because so many of the best bands had that benefit of rehearsing and playing hundreds of gigs together before breaking through.

I like a lot of modern indie bands but many of them don't really have that tightness that only comes from playing live music together for years before recording songs in a studio.

After being so disappointed with Feeder’s “Tallulah” album, I too worry why have all the bands who were good once upon a time, gone downhill so fast :(.

My other half is obsessed with them and often have to put up with that album being played in the flat on repeat.

Come back Super Furry Animals, it’s been far too long since the last album and hopefully one day Gene will reform, although that one is pipe dream sadly.

I just think it’s harder for bands (particularly Rock/Metal/Alternative bands- and I emphasize the Bolded) to sell records and hit it big as the music landscape has changed tons. There is still a lot out there, but most of it will go unrecognized because it just isn’t the bubblegum crap that sells.

I would suggest checking out www.kexp.org.

It's a radio station in Seattle that plays any and every genre of music. Tons of live stuff. Lots of indie stuff. Lots of brand new stuff that nobody is playing yet and lots of older stuff too.

The Museum of Pop Culture or MoPOP used to be called The Experience Music Project. Opened as a museum for music...focussed on Pacific Northwest bands. That's where the exp comes from on their call letters and it houses the station.

Anyway the station is all about music. John is the Morning...or The Morning Show With John Richards was my morning commute everytime I've lived in Seattle as an adult.

Listening a bit to American Authors… I knew one of there tracks.. the one everyone knows.. best day if my life.. but they got a good few tracks..
