Not that it's (hopefully) relevant to a pro like Eto'o, but I suppose most of the gains for us amateurs are mental, ie doing the right thing, and certainly for something like cycling there are advantages for things like pacing, skills, nutrition and all that.

It's probably best to get rid of any notion of peaking as that will create a mental ceiling on how you can go. Just do your best and see where it gets you.

Yes, and also the importance of building up your aerobic base which, unless you have 30 hours a week to train from a young age will peak much later in life. This is why even the pros in endurance sport tend to peak in their 30's, and many age groupers peak in the 40's or even later.
