What's to be done? An evaluation of Everton's player recruitment

We've played two home league games - we just cannot do the whole 'it's all changed wonderfully' yet.

Must have been like a Viagra testing lab in here after 19 games of Martinez in his first season
I agree Orly, which is why i caveated my statements with 'we appear' and 'we seem'!

I am just trying to counter the doom mongers mate. I am not deluded about Everton, in fact I consider myself very pragmatic. The transfer window was not what is was hoped it would be, but much of that hope came from fans whipping up expectation. I am old enough to know two games do not make a good season, but my optimism stems from that fact that we do seem to be addressing the most basic of the errors that had crept into our game over the past two seasons. I genuinely belive that if we continue in that vein, we have an outside chance at the Europa league places, and a better than decent chance at the cups.

Thanks for all the feedback from everyone, it is greatly appreciated. Unfortunately I am travelling away over the next few days so will take me a bit of time to come back to individuals questions/points raised.

I think people have certainly highlighted some of the weaknesses of the article. I do think it risks an overly romanticised view of the Moyes era. Likewise there is a presumption that the money was available (I believe it was) but if it wasn’t the whole basis for the article does become undermined.

What I suppose I was looking to do was the move the debate forward from a position of blaming Moshiri on one hand to those looking to defend him on the other. This is in many ways a reflection of my own stance as someone who is very optimistic about what Moshiri can bring for us but also someone who became increasingly frustrated as the window went on.

More importantly though I do think at some point as fans and as a club we have to find a way to move forward. That doesn’t mean negate or ignore the criticisms of whats happened but try to find a positive way you want the club to operate going forward.

I haven’t gone into many details on players, as like the debate about whether money was available it is a separate debate and the article would have been too long. There is a good article to be written on that though and I would urge people to put themselves forward to do so. It could also be broader than just rating the players to asking how far we have improved the squad and filled in the key holes.

In short I think the business we did was very good but ultimately a lot of it wasn’t essential. Gueye looks a fantastic signing (and fits the criteria I have outlined!) as does Williams. Bolasie will do well for us though has been quite costly (and in my money fills a position not essential). Valencia is a let down but we need to give him a chance, while Stekelenberg has started well.

I’ll try to write as article before January about what our aim should be for that window. It’s my own view that the objective of “coming out of each window stronger” was a very useful mission statement but is now largely irrelevant. Every club has money and every club will be getting stronger. The aim has to be much higher. Hopefully I’ll get something together on that.

The main thrust of this article is that we need to develop a coherent strategy of what we are trying to do. What do readers think the best way forward is? I wholeheartedly agree with those seeing Walsh as a key man going forward. Holes in the squad will emerge over the next 4 months (they always do) and they will need to be plugged in January. The ability to identify these weaknesses as clearly as possible will also underline any success we have.

If Kenwright and Elstone were hands on in charge of recruitment - get shut.

even if they weren't get shut on principle.

If Walsh does sourcing and recruitment let him do it, if he's only sourcing and identifying players - get a proper negotiator.
