Arsonists are being blamed for two fires at homes within minutes of each other in Huyton.

Both fires are being linked. At the first house flammable liquid was poured through the letterbox and at another a firework was thrown inside the property after a window was smashed.

Police confirmed firefighters were called to two separate addresses in Lyme Cross Road and Woolfall Heath Avenue shortly before 2am following reports of fires - which police confirmed they are treating as arson.

A spokesman said: "At Lyme Cross Road a flammable liquid is believed to have been poured through the letter box and set alight causing damage.

At Woolfall Heath Avenue a downstairs window has been broken and a lit firework thrown inside, again causing damage."

No-one was injured in either fire which detectives are treating as linked.

An elderly couple live at the address in Woolfall Heath Avenue.

A neighbour, who did not wish to be named, said their home has been targeted two nights in a row.

She said: "I got up when my fire alarms were going off. Smoke was coming out of their living room so I took them in here. They were really upset.

"They were okay but they were shaken.

"Their window got put in during the early hours of Wednesday morning and last night this happens.

"She said 'Why should I have to move after living here for 42 years?' It's such a shame."

In Lyme Cross Road one resident said she wasn't surprised by the attack as she has fitted a fire blanket on her letterbox which can be locked to protect her home from arsonists.

She said: "It's a family who live there. This is terrible."

Another neighbour said: "The front door was on fire and there was a lot of smoke. I think they're alright, they went to a neighbour's house."

Both houses have been cordoned off and patrols have been stepped up in the area while an investigation by the force's Matrix Serious Organised Crime unit and Knowsley CID continues.

Anyone know if there's motive behind these? After rereading it, seems the house in Woolfall was an old couple so unlikely to be anything besides an easy target

I think we need a new Australia for which to send convicts. Buy some god forsaken hellhole in the third world , cordon them off and wait for them either to die or build a nation that makes quite good evening tv soap operas.

I appreciate it's shocking, but titles of 'what's going on' are a little misleading, you can't use isolated incidents to make generalised assumptions about society

Excellent point however it mustn't be understated that wild accusations and general assumptions are a lot more fun.
