If you actually think about taking elephants over the Alps to use in battle it's really a stupid decision, arguably proven by how many men he lost because of them (the Elephants made the journey a lot longer, causing hypothermia, starvation etc.)
There's a case to be made that suggests a lot of things written about Hannibal were written by Romans around 70 years later to enhance the reputation of Scipio Africanus.
