What precisely is the reason that LD and Ricky D aren't starting opposite each other?

We'll see against Villa. I can't really see Drenthe not starting if he's fit enough to play 20 mins after illness. The only excuse would be not starting Donovan every game because he's 'not quite there yet'. I'd like to think we'll see both.

Do we think LD is going to start? That will be his fourth 90 minute game in a 1.5 week stretch. I don't know...that seems to be asking for injury. It'll be a week in between Saturday and the next game, but that's a crap ton of minutes. And that is the same amount of games and time that gave him an injury in October.

We might see Drenthe and Gueye on the wings instead with LD as a striker sub.

Then again, I have no idea how many uninjured players we have left, so he might have to hobble through it.

Everyone should be fearful of the fact that Neville is probably playing, and he's got the same amount of playing time on his legs.

Well, service to Lorenzo Saha isn't working out.
Trent Cahill has been playing injured.
Steven Coleman is injured and isn't playing.

The thing about Drenthe is, he doesn't work backwards well enough, Pienaar was excellent at covering back and that ethic along with that of Baines made our left side genuinely superb.
As for Jason, he might be wondering why he has let himself in for 6 weeks of the turmoil and fighting mid table instead of sunning the soles of his feet in Cali-for-niy-ay!

Jason would have been doing fitness tests, blood work, listening to nutrition presentations and two-a-days at the US national team camp. Then playing two friendlies at the end of the month with the "B" team. Trust me, he'd rather be here.

He just got over a sickness and before that he had a knock. The guy needs some recovery time.

And I just can't see Landon playing another 90 on a short turnaround. So...Barkley if fit? Bily on the left with Gueye on the right?

I weep.

Sod that. Donovan is on loan only for 2 months, we more than likely aint signing him and we have paid a fee for the deal.

Play him every game until he drops.

Donovan's done okay since he came back, some good bits of play, some not so good, but we know he can be promising and will get better the more he plays. He's pretty functional for a player of his size and speed, but there's no doubt he puts in a good ball with either foot. I think if used correctly he can be a pretty incisive player for us int he final third, whether it be through crossing or scoring. I don't really see the potential in his dribbling or creative passing, but this is where Drenthe should be come into play and compliment Donovan's more reserved approach. The Dutchman's much more of a ball player, much more likely to be players and do something inventive in possession. He has an energy to his game aswell, and whilst he's not as mature defensively as Donovan he does give you that option to play a high tempo, pressing game higher up the pitch. He's a bit of a wildcard but Royston's potential for the Blues is massive, we just need to get him on the pitch on a regular basis, and I think Moyes will settle on it after his usual spell of dabbling. Hopefully that's against Villa.

Uh, if he gets injured on Saturday how exactly does that help us for the rest of his loan period here? Cause right about now he and Drenthe are the only two people that look like they have an attacking clue on the pitch (well, and Baines when he gets up the left). I shudder to think of when he leaves.

I think that's not so true, he is more direct and maybe doesn't look to play the overlap ball for Baines so much as he wants to run at people. His tracking back was fine in the week, I watched him like a hawk and when at half time he came over to the away fans almost fell over at how tiny he is, I'd honestly never noticed, he looks like a kid!!

I think Bily was appalling in the week, how he thinks playing him ahead of well anyone is a good idea I have no idea, his idea of tracking back is jogging 10yards off the player making shapes. Useless ****

Altho at half time Vellios showed some moves, that kid has an incredible first touch.
