And it's not a bad thought. If I had my way I'd remove the Reputation system entirely, safeguarding it is time consuming, in fact, I've only just had to infract the person who last left you a rep comment...

But there are benefits. You're correct though in that here is certainly more conversational - hence the requirement to remove the tedious "Yeah well said mate" element to discussion.

And with regards to a community self regulating, the Reputation system aids that.

With regards to the system being a vehicle open to abuse - it's less abusable than the private messaging system.

*thinks about saying "Well said mate"

/decides against it.

Horses for courses mate. Different sites are just that, different. There are cliques on all of them. Sure, things can be abused, but, in general, when that happens, it gets sorted out.

The whole clique thing here is exagerrated anyway. When people talk about themselves as "being in the clique" they're generally taking the p^ss out of themselves.

Woolly isn't in it anymore....

BTW this a good site despite me having a dip about the card thing - nothings perfect - except a young Cameron Diaz

Don't know if this would be possible without switching the actual service used to provide the forums, but a system i quite like on other sites is where you can thumbs up/thumbs down each individual post. Means that if you like what somebody has said you can do that anonymously, gets rid of the 'well said' comments and also avoids the confrontation aspects which can arise from neg repping because the thumbs down is totally anonymous.

maybe the neg rep could be removed and only allow for positive rep? that way users can leave positive comments about posts they like/agree with, and if a post offends/upsets a user that much they can simply report it, allowing a moderator to review the content? It would also stop users from neg repping new users needlessly (e.g. when Dylan had a temporary account after an error happened with his)

The rep system is one of the acest things about this place.

This.

(Crap, I should have just done this via a rep instead of taking up thread space).

But yeah, it is kind of funny seeing some people go off on one. If it's genuinely upsetting people, which I can't see why as it's just little squares and it's the net and stuff, perhaps all rep could show up as who it was from. I know that's an upgraded member advantage, but it does seem to be the prime reason why accusations of a Clique get's thrown around.*

*There is no Clique (y)

I don't think its purely neg rep as such but more the comments that often come with it.

Its more to do with anonymity not the rep or what is said. But, as I found out Gold Membership brings its rewards as well as going some way to keep the site running.

Like everyone is saying they are but colored dots.
