What costitutes a Derby these days?

Just watching footy focus and in the show write up and then during the show about twenty times Utd vs the red****e was referred to as a Derby, my understanding was the only derby involving two different cities typically was when they only had one team in that city, Barcodes vs Sunderland etc

Nowadays it seems to get used for anything with two teams from the same region, Villa West Brom (Midlands Derby etc) and now Utd vs the ****e, Newcastle or Sunderland v Boro etc in recent years

Guess the question is why the need to try to oversell a game that already has interest by slapping the derby title on something which simply isn't and never has been one?

Agreed just irks me no end when any game with a bit of rivalry or bad blood their gets called a derby lately, most ridiculous one i ever heard was you lot vs Arsenal one time getting called a derby in some rag though

Nothing annoys me more than United fans (usually non manc) saying that Liverpool is the biggest game of the season. It has never been for me, even when City were **** it was always the biggest game

We have the same with Red****e fans saying that about the man u game, funnily enough their faces didnt look that way a few years ago when we smashed them 3-0 though

That's no doubt to annoy you though. I say the same to City fans in work and it really bugs them, I don't believe it for a second though. If we get beat by Liverpool tomorrow then the only people I'll have to face at work on Monday is the plastic Liverpool fan in our place who is from Colchester, he's so pitiful I don't even get irked by him.
