West Brom have appointed former Real Betis manager Pepe Mel as their new head coach on an 18-month deal.

The Premier League club have been looking for a new manager since sacking Steve Clarke on 14 December.

Spaniard Mel, 50, held talks with West Brom in December but was initially ruled out after it became clear he wanted to bring his own backroom staff.

Never heard of him until recently. Which probably says more about me than anything else.

But I bet he had never heard of West Brom till recently.

Which makes us both bad teds.

Good manager I think. Had Betis playing boss footy last season, god knows what happened this season though. Play attacking so it should be a good game when we go to WBA.

Disgusting the way the assistant of WBA didn't know who he was though, just shows how thick English managers/coaches actually are compared to others. Obviously some of you won't know who he is because you mightn't like La Liga but surely a professional manager/coach who is on grands per week should!

Always find these appointments weird, they'd written him off before Xmas, now they're getting a bit desperate all of a sudden he's suitable? Strange.
Anyway know nothing of him, WBA are harmless enough so hope he does alright.

They ruled him out because he wanted to take his backroom staff with him and WBA said no however it said before on SSN that he is bringing his backroom staff next season.

Not sure that swapping Steve Clarke for Pepe Mel is any kind of upgrade; yes he did take Betis up, and they did alright last season, but he hasnt exactly done anything else of note.

why should he know?

why should he know?

Real Betis manager... a big club in Spain thats like a Spanish manager not knowing who the Everton manager is.

large majority of English media/people involved in Football aren't very clever and don't know much about it. I can remember on MNF and Ed Chamberlain & G. Neville didn't know who Pablo Osvaldo was.
