Player Valuation: Free Transfer
Hi all,

History Indoors is an organisation run by researchers from the University of Essex providing free history talks to the general public during the lockdown on Zoom. Our next talk on Wednesday looks at whether the pre-Premier League 1970s and 80s was a golden era or not. Terracing and affordable ticket prices versus racism and hooliganism?

This might be particularly enjoyable for Everton fans. Do you look back on pre-PL football with fondness?

The talk is at 2pm and 7pm on Wednesday 1st July. You can find out more and sign up here: https://historyindoors.co.uk/talk/the-golden-age-english-football-before-the-prem/

It was the golden era for hooliganism. Football was ok depending on who u supported.Golden age for football no.

it was more enjoyable to watch the players had more freedom etc , however players now are fitter, faster , better diet etc but it can only keep getting faster for so long eventually once it evens out there may have to be a shift back to strength power tackles and long ball i.e crosses players in the air etc , once all players are at the high speed and fitness levels it will be the only way to gain an advantage , social media doesn`t help today boys either , idiots poking cameras at them 24/7 whats that all about.

It was a lot more exciting, there were a lot more flair players but crowd trouble, racism, bad pitches, bad equipment and waterlogged pitches were prevalent.

Better because it wasn't driven by money, so it was genuinely sport rather than business. Like most things, letting scummy people with no love for the game "monetise" it has ruined it.

But hooliganism and poor ground safety are (mostly, if you ignore the RS) consigned to history, which is nice.

Moody, tense, exhilirating, exciting on and off the pitch, dark, alcohol fuelled, FA Cup meant nearly as much as the league, teams were put under serious mental pressure from home fans who were `on top of the pitch', some muddy pitches, top 4 thank God meant NOTHING, less PC, sweaty, smelly, all stadiums individual,. Players less mercianary, way less foreign players. Crazy coach and train journeys.

For a young man it was a Golden era.

Now a middle age one with sanitised stadiums and atmospheres, FA Cup meaning nothing, you cant make a joke about someones appearance, better stadium facilities, much safer for everyone, no muddy pitches, VAR etc do I prefer it today DO I FU&88k.

just picked this up from walsall vs leeds : I remember a game, when I was standing at the Hilary ST. end when Colin took a free kick, he smashed the ball into the back of the net, and the referee slowly walked to the back of the goal and checked the net for damage absolutely wonderful. Whilst on, there have been one or two comments about Bernie Wright, I am not sure which season maybe 73/4?, but anyway we were playing Leeds in a pre-season friendly and near to where I was standing Bernie went into a 50/50 with Norman Hunter , Bernie ended up in a heap on the floor, he jumped and nose to nose with Hunter wagged a finger in Hunter’s face. A little later after half time they met together again, ‘hardman’ Hunter fell to the floor and was stretchered off muttering 'nutter ', priceless.

And all 3pm kick off. Which meant you could play yourself in the Sunday league.

The facilities and crowd safety are better today. The competitiveness has gone. In those days you could reasonably dream that, whoever you supported, you might live to see your team win a major trophy - Wimbledon from non-league to FA Cup winners, West Ham/Ipswich/Southampton/Derby/Forest/Leeds all winning trophies. Since the Premier League there have been very few trophy winners outside of the Sky 6, and the gap in money/global brandism (if there's such a word) is only going to get bigger.

Liked it better , less sanitized on and off the pitch , 3 pm kickoff on Saturday .
Its safer today for fans facility wise on a different planet.
But the game has lost its soul a bit, money rules the day you are not going to get a Forest or villa coming from nowhere to European glory these day.
The 3 pm Saturday was 100% better in my eyes, and if you didn't actually go the game , you really couldnt give a good options on it as if listened on the radio or a few minutes on tv at night couldnt really give you a flavour of the match that days.
Felt more exclusive that you actually went through the turnstiles.

I thought the 90’ s were great... not for us obviously barring a couple of years in the middle ... but there were some great players in that decade . Gazza , Ronaldo , Romario , Zidane there were heaps more ... think Maradona was still playing in the early 90’s was the last of the great Brazil players although some played into the 2000’s. Money wasn’t massive then and players played for the shirt a bit more than today and the introduction of the pass back rule was the one positive rule change I can remember. Like people have mentioned , hooliganism wasn’t as bad and famillies started going to the games , England had a good team ... the only bad thing about it was that we had some truly woeful players but also had our last three world class players in south all , Beardsley and kanchelskis and obviously we won our last trophy then

There were a lot less foreign players, back then. Chances are most of the players you'd sign were from a lower league team. So the money was better distributed to lower clubs as the big boys would buy from you. Now the potential are already at the big clubs and loaned down to the smaller ones. Now a good English player is lucky to get to league 2 never mind the top 2 leagues. But they must of been good British Players as English Clubs ruled Europe until we got kicked out. However, we didn't really have a good International side back then. England didn't qualify for 74 or 78 World Cup. Didn't do great in Spain 82. Wasn't until 86 we had anything to shout about and very nearly went out in the group stages, but for the Everton players sorting out Poland.
