If that's not elitism, then I don't know what is. Absolute bollocks by the way, we have a good education system for those who can't afford it or is the son/daughter of a peer.

And who said teachers do it solely "for the kids?". Come on I credit you with more intelligence than that, sure they have to have a love for what they do but part of the attraction is a well paid professional, relatively secure job. It was that type of industry. No qualms on it being well paid - the teachers studied hard for it and you want to attract the right people to be educating your child about the world and preparing them for adulthood don't you?

I liked the dramatic ending but it's not some mob handed take over of society; it's merely a group of people who work hard and are getting f*cked over by the government. So they're doing something about it. Good on them I say, I have no kids or friends who are teachers but it would take self, twisted or bitter person to pour scorn on what they're trying to do.

Far be it for me to critisize the motivations of others, but on a moral level I will never agree with strikes because it is mob handed. Negotiation is the adult way to do things. Sit down and find a compromise while continuing to deliver the service you're paid to deliver. That's the adult way of doing things. Striking is throwing your toys out of the pram. It's an outdated mob tactic.

Why have the vast majority of educational innovations of the last few years come from outside of the teaching profession? You know? How often do the trade unions go back to the state and say lets try this innovation to make learning better? How often do they create something like Khan Academy? The perception (emphasis noted) is that they are only interested in money for teachers. They couldn't give two hoots about the education of the kids. That is something I struggle to support.

I mean a big part of the appeal of free schools as I understood it was that they could set their own pay for teachers, yet they were roundly opposed by the unions. Doesn't exactly show a lot of faith in their members does it?

And re your first paragraph, the PISA results compare UK education with our peers internationally, and we do a lot worse than a country of our wealth should do. Compare that to the university league tables, where Britain and America dominate, and it's not a stretch to come to the conclusion I did, is it?

And re the class remark, cmon mate, you're better than that. This has bugger all to do with class.

This should go well.

first up.

Teacher on news reckons that now they havent got their guaranteed pay rises loads will leave teaching to work in the private sector. They see their friends buying houses etc & they can't.

Not sure what doing like as many wont have any other kind of work experience, never mind the fact that the job market aint exactly awash with opportunities, but hey-ho lets see how they like it in the real worls where folk haven't had a pay rise for years and only get 26 days holiday, or maybe theyd like to try the self employment option where you get no paid holidays or guaranteed wage.

I await the stampede and a collective releasing a version of schools out.

& thats just 1 of the groups hit today by our friends in govt.

But as those front benchers with their tax cut like to tell us, "We're All In This Together."

All right, Mate.
