Honestly some of you's are like kids without a toy over the south. Wah wah wah Londons getting all the money. My word I defend scousers down here every day of the week but I tell you what coming on here I can see your hatred of the south is far more bitter and deep than the other way around. Thatcher happened. Time to let it go. What ever happened to good natured banter?

Well I wonder why that might be, Nik?

Something that happened 30 years ago mate. Always gonna be a bit of banter between north and south of course, I'm kinda stuck in the middle having 2 northern parents and spend a lot of time in Liverpool and Boro, but on here it's kind of nasty.

I have no idea whether these austerity measures will work. I only know they're supposed to work in theory. Thatcher and Reagan made swinging tax and welfare cuts in the name of "pain before gain" and they are loathed for it. Possibly rightly so, I'm no expert. I didn't live through it and had I been in Liverpool in the eighties my opinion would probably be entirely different. But what I do know is that the economy did get the gain from those measures. Whether the gains were distributed fairly I don't know. They came post 92. That period of growth went right through until 2007. Unemployment fell.

I'm guessing you've just got your GCSE grade B in Economics, Paul.

Go on, I'm right, aren't I?

Thatchers main legacy, and aim, was to move the economy from an industrial based one, to a post industrial based economy. She privatised most of the nations state controlled companies, and attempted to push the UK forward so it could be at the forefront of an emerging change in global economics.

Some would argue she was correct in what she did, but the reality was she did it at a heavy cost to the working class people of the UK. Contrast this with what has been done in recent years with the banking sector, the more affluent class are never left to hang high and dry.

This might the a simplistic view on economics, but high inflation only damages those who have money and assets in the long run. People who have less, find that governments will print more money to combat devaluation. This is why your granny's house cost £4k to buy, but your house will probably cost you five times your income and you've no chance of paying it off. Like I said though, that is a simplistic view of economics and one that favours my poor ass

Bugger I sound like a conspiracy theorist. But the reality is that most of socialist paranoia is based on some element of truth. It's far easier to create the illusion that poor people are sucking the country dry, than point out the reality that the more affluent people in society seldom feel the pain. There's this dilution that people on mega bucks work harder than everyone else. My experience is that most people, not all, but most people who fly up the corporate ladder either do so because of who they know and the private schools they went to, or because they are liars who'd sell their granny for a pound.

There's one other thing that happens when you screw Mr Poor who can't rub two pennies together...... high crime. If you don't have the resources, education, or confidence to pull your self out of a slum, you'll foster a sub culture that turns to crime. Welfare reforms are never the way forward to stimulate an economy, the disadvantaged in society should be helped and encouraged. I don't buy it that people are naturally lazy and want to live on the dole, in my experience they do so because they lack the confidence and education to do anything differently. There'll always be the exception to the rule, but that happens in every walk of life. Public sector workers for example, plenty of those who are just as lazy as anyone living on benefits. I'll aim that one at the National Assembly in Wales, just in case I offend any hard working council workers. I will concede there are many people who work their nuts off in the public sector, my mum being one of them :-)
