It's a well told story of mine how my Dad an avid red came to terms with a rebellious blue son. We agreed to differ, but even when I was young he was liberal enough to take me to Goodison on match day and not complain too much. When he sadly had his first heart attack he blamed it on a particularly boring game between the blues and Coventry City.
I remember not to fondly my teenage years when Everton were sadly not that great, but there always seemed someone in the team to keep hope alive. I loved the much underrated Martin Dobson who seemed to carry the team at times, Bob Latchford who I thought would never be surpassed as the best number 9 I had seen in a blue shirt, or the embullient Duncan McKenzie who brought a sense of the impossible at times. There are too many to mention, but a collective memory to the perfect night in Rotterdam when we won our first European trophy and that wonderful team that delivered it. Everton has been blessed with a hero just about every time one was needed from Kevin Campbell to Duncan Ferguson and the young maestro called Rooney. Sadly I am not convinced that any of the current team would feature in my roll of honour. We have some steady players, overrated ones like Lukaku and Barkley, and some who show mere flashes of what they can do.
To bring my get to know me to a close I will say my career has taken me to other parts of the country so I miss the banter of living in Liverpool. Though distance alone does not reduce the pain or disappointment of Everton losing, or those horrible days when they fail to turn up at all. My wife still loves Everton playing on a Sunday or the Monday night game because then we might just avoid a miserable weekend. Like most life time blues I live in hope of another dawn that brings success, a trophy, and Champions League for real.
In my business life I have been successful. I know from experience that success comes from knowing what you want, having a plan on how you will get it, and when required having the confidence to be bold. In one word success and failure are separated by confidence. I hope Moshiri, Kenwright, and Koeman can find a way to deliver it.
