Georgetown is good for an afternoon. Nice place to walk around away from the mass tourists and museums etc. Some great restaurants too.

Great place to visit, I stayed a few blocks from Dupont circle it's easy to walk to most of the sights from there. Georgetown is worth visiting as is Alexandria but that's a metro ride away.Go to Arlington cemetery and get the ticket that includes the guided tour on the "bus", walk along the Potomac from the Lincoln to Jefferson memorials, the Vietnam war memorial and the National mall. There are plenty of good bars but take your passport, you will get id'd often and one place near Dupont wouldn't let us in despite being 40,46 and 49 yrs old !. The Newseum http://www.newseum.org was very good and the national museum of history was ok http://americanhistory.si.edu.
Get the train to Baltimore , we needed passports to get tickets, at the station you can get a tram to Camden yards where the Orioles play (I'd go to the game) from there you can walk to have a look at the Ravens stadium as well, walk down to the harbour and get the water taxi to Fells point.
Enjoy yourself.

going there in a few weeks, staying dupont circle...anyone got any recommends(bars, restaurants, things to do) apart from the obvious.

thinking of doing a baltimore day trip as well..worth it?
obviously this would make more sense on tripadvisor or whatevs, but as 99% of people on here are everton fans this increases their intelligence/general knowledge by 20.2%...
How long will you be in the area for? If it's 3 or 4 days, I'd probably stay in DC along with Arlington cemetery. If it's longer, then I'd recommend heading up to Baltimore, Inner Harbor (aquarium is great especially if you have kids). In the area, you're staying Ratskeller (I believe that's the name has a great selection of beers. Other restaurants I'd recommend are Zaytinya (mezze) and Rasika. Both would be great for a special occasion. In DC, part of the fun is just walking the National Mall and popping in and out as you please since they are all free. I'd highly recommend the Spy Museum though you do have to pay for that one. Let me know if you have any questions-I live right outside of DC in the Maryland suburbs.
