Was Van Gaal's sacking the death knell of the F.A. Cup?

We all know that the Cup has been losing prestige for decades now for a variety of reasons. Older fans regret it. Younger fans are probably more take it or leave it.

Question: Did the obvious contempt Man. U felt for winning it last year and their sacking of the winning coach hours later really hammer in the final nail. I read Gerrard talking about the lovable's 3rd round tie and saying that winning the FA cup would not be a good season because "look at United last year with Van Gaal".

I've loved the cup since I was a child and have been lucky enough to have followed Everton to the finals on several occasions but its over isn't it? It's unsaveable now. For the first time in my life I actually couldn't care less if we win the 3rd round.

Chill, bruh. Van Gaal was going no matter what United did in the final; it was their league finish that sealed his fate.

The FA cup is a casualty of the media feeding frenzy surrounding the premier league. They make bucketfulls of cash televising epl - just look at what they have left over to throw back into the game.
As part of their bigging up of what is, let's face it, division 1,into a monster, they play down other competitions.
Don't fall for it! The FA cup is a massive competition played for by way more teams from way more levels. The sudden death of a single game, the over a century of history and stories, the romance..... It's a beautiful competition.

The biggest damage IMHO is done by the fa, as they get rid of replays. Nothing beats an epic replay series.

Any epl club complaining about fixture congestion can rely on their bloated squad of overpaid professionals, or just roll over and die. Why change the rules of a competition the world has watched for over a hundred years just to suit the big teams.

It's suffered death by a thousand cuts since the late 90s. I don't think there's been one major hammer blow, but the following have all contributed to it's demise:

Introduction of penalties
Semis at Wembley (personally the single most damaging decision)
Changing the kick-off from Sat 3pm to accommodate the PL
Messing about with the draw
Allowing Man Utd to drop out for that joke tournament

Frankly, there's no coming back for it now, the FA have been thoroughly determined to make the PL the sole focus for English football.

Manchester United fired Tommy Docherty a few weeks after winning the Cup back in 1977.

For different readings I know, but what happened to LVG was not unprecedented at OT :)

For Palace, ( and I would guess Sunderland, Hull, Swansea, Burnley, Watford) the FA Cup is a bit of a sideshow sadly. Don't get past the third round unless you can be sure to get to the final. Don't draw and need a replay whatever you do. Give the squad players a game but try not to get embarrassed.
We're at Bolton tomorrow. They must fancy their chances but even they would be thinking that they don't want a cup run to scupper their chances of getting out of League 1.
Money has killed the FA Cup. All the OP's reasons have money at the root of them.
Plus the Final isn't played in black and white anymore and there's no "Cup Final It's a Knockout".

If I am honest with you, I think that has been one of the main reasons.

The FA Cup draw used to be an event in itself, with two arl blokes drawing balls from a black bag in silence, amidst unbearable, growing tension as one waited for one's team to be drawn.

Now it is just like a game show and IMO had greatly detracted from the Cup's stature.

The F.A are the biggest cause of the decline in this great cup competition.
The next nail in the coffin will be midweek matches.
