Personally I feel that that would be a trickery. We have to remember that ref can give penalties without cards too. Cards come into a play after certain level of fouls. Players must take responsibility of their actions too. Just like refs do.

You could still give a pen without giving a booking. There was no guarantee Fletcher was going to score, If the pen goes in the fact he's cost Newcastle a goal I think a yellow would suffice. In that instance a red and costing them a goal is too much. As someone earlier said, it would be a different story if a player stopped and certain goal e.g Neville against the RS.

Change the rule.

Book the player after the pen. If he missed Coloccini a red, pen goes in give him a yellow.
Too contentious. At what point is the pen 'missed'? A better solution would be for the ref to offer the offended team captain choice of penalty or sending off.

They give away a penalty..? I get where you are going with it but the penalty is a pretty big deal
But We're talking about a clear goal scoring opportunity. So it's not really a big deal at all. If a striker is fouled going round the keeper then he was maybe 95% certain to score, foul him and you reduce that to 70% with no further punishment. So it would mean the foul put you in a better position.

It's correct by the rulebook, but I think the rule needs to change. Conceding a pen and losing a man for one offence is too harsh and has ruined many games over the years.

it's not even a tough decision imo. They give a red for "stopping a goalscoring opportunity" - but yet the attacking team still has the penalty, so they still have that goalscoring opportunity. I mean in such instances where a player is clearly going to score and they get hacked down they could possibly introduce penalty goals like the do in rugby (if they feel the need).

But the bottom line is, player's miss absolute sitters all the time, i just don't understand the reasoning behind "stopping a goalscoring opportunity" when they have the pen anyway. Outside of the box and it's clear like last man, that should be a red, but inside the box yellow and a pen is ample punishment.

in this instance there wasn't even a goalscoring opportunity anyway - poor refereeing and ruined the game in one swift moment.

The Football Association say an Independent Regulatory Commission found the match referee had made an error in dismissing Coloccini for denying an obvious goalscoring opportunity.

English football's governing body also said they have charged Newcastle for failing to control their players - in relation to the reaction to the sending off.

The Magpies have until 18:00 GMT on Friday to respond to the charge
