Walking Football

I'm a fairly fit, 32 year old and still play "normal" football but also play walking football on a weekly basis and have been for the past 3 years.

It's still very fun to play and great to see the age ranges from 30 to our oldest player who is 72!

I’ve been playing for 5 years now, even started a thread on GOT years ago. It didn’t get going, nobody else was playing , just the usual jokes about our midfield would be good at it etc.
When I started I hadn’t played for about 35 years, what was nice was the way the touch came quickly back. Depending on where we are playing ( outdoors or indoors) and the numbers per side the game can change from week to week. I get more touches of the ball per session than when I played 11 side, and am able to do things I used to see only on Tv , like slide the ball through a goalkeepers legs - I used to vaguely wonder if forwards just got lucky with their shot. The key thing you learn quickly is to play the ball to feet , or just in front of a player, those wonderful through balls into space for someone to “ run” onto just don’t work.
People laugh at the “walking “ aspect - until they try it themselves. Continuous sessions of an hour, hour and a half even with breaks are quite taxing and a 30 sec burst of walking, tracking forward then getting back really raise the heart rate. Ok there is an age element here, we’re all mainly over 65, but it’s not just a leisurely walk.
The banter and camaraderie are also a big part .

I played it whilst I worked in the London area for a year. It was about a year or so after I'd had an ankle fusion so was a real confidence builder after that. It's great fun and there were some really good players too. Made me realise that no matter how bad my other ankle gets (it will end up being fused too - all down to football/sport) I will be able to do that and keep playing.
I can't run anymore, but can still play five a side for now although the AstroTurf grows round me now.

On a similar note I highly recommend Man v Fat football for anyone wanting to lose weight and play football, it's a bit like a slimming club but you just turn up, get weighed and then play a 7 a side game. It's a proper league format and the results on the scales earn goals towards the overall result.

7 weeks in and it's been a good laugh, great to be playing football again and on the whole met loads of decent people.

Has Unsy turned up?

Anybody played it ?
I started playing this week after 25 years of not playing football and doing very little exercise.
I have been walking round like l have shat myself ever since it is a lot harder than you might think .
I would definitely recommend it though , I'm 66 and never thought I would be playing football again.
Do players get penalised if they break into a bit of a run? It's just that I feel (at first maybe) you'd automatically jog or run at some point unintentionally.

It wasn't particularly stricķ on it where I was playing but for obvious runs a free kick was given.
I think in more serious competition it's stricter

Yeah good summary. Initially you may have to work hard to stop yourself running either for a ball a yard in front or when you move forward with the ball, but that’s part of the discipline and learning. When it’s organised it’s strict, otherwise no point , but we organise games ourselves so let’s say it’s a bit more “ relaxed” then.
