Wales have achieved their highest Fifa world ranking, entering the top 10 for the first time.

Chris Coleman's side have moved up 12 places to 10th, with England one place above in ninth, up six places.

Wales' previous highest ranking was 22nd and as recently as August 2011, they were as low as 117th.

They enter the top 10 after Gareth Bale's goal secured a 1-0 win over Belgium in a Euro 2016 qualifier in June.

They are three points clear at the top of Group B with four games remaining as they bid to reach their first major finals since 1958.

Wales find themselves above reigning European champions Spain in the rankings, with Vicente del Bosque's side down two places in 12th.

"It's a remarkable achievement but it's testimony to all the hard work the players have put in," Wales coach Osian Roberts said.

"They turn up for every camp, they work hard and buy into the game plan.

"They deserve every credit for getting us to where we are in terms of the rankings, although we are fully aware in many ways it counts for nothing - it's about qualifying.

"Our sole focus is on qualifying and getting out of this group."

Argentina top the Fifa rankings despite losing to Chile on penalties in the final of the Copa America.

England enter the top 10 after maintaining their 100% record in Euro 2016 qualification following a 3-2 win in Slovenia in June.

Scotland are down one place in 29th while Northern Ireland rise seven places to 37th.

The ratings do seem weird, but that's no fault of the Welsh, who are clearly doing alright. Good on them.

How they weight matches can produce some weird results. There's a multiplier based off of what kind of match it is:

The number of points that can be won in a match depends on the following factors:
  • Was the match won or drawn? (M)
  • How important was the match (ranging from a friendly match to a FIFA World Cup™ match)? (I)How strong was the opposing team in terms of ranking position and the confederation to which they belong? (T and C)
These factors are brought together in the following formula to ascertain the total number of points (P):

P = M x I x T x C

The following criteria apply to the calculation of points:

I: Importance of match

Friendly match (including small competitions): I = 1.0

FIFA World Cup™ qualifier or confederation-level qualifier: I = 2.5

Confederation-level final competition or FIFA Confederations Cup: I = 3.0

FIFA World Cup™ final competition: I = 4.0

So, all of the European countries have gotten a nice bump from playing mostly qualifiers instead of friendlies since the World Cup. South American sides just got a nice little bump from Copa America. I imagine a few CONCACAF sides will magically shoot up in next month's rankings when the Gold Cup happens.

can't really argue with it tbh - all the stats point towards us being the 10th best. first team to go from bottom seeds in one WC draw to top seeds in the next!

these rankings are utter tosh fair play. above spain after they won 2 euros and a WC consecuitevly and we won a one off game with belgium who have reached 2nd by doing nothing of note. topping a group ahead of croatia, WC quarters then 2nd in a group behind wales :s
