This has to be one of the worst experiences of all time. Forlornly staring out the window each time I hear the rev of an engine, just in case it's the delivery van with my new bed.

Outlook not so good, mind. Bed shop cannot see my order advancing any further than 'assigned for delivery', courier firm (XDP) are incommunicado, and they get abysmal ratings on review sites, saying items are regularly delivered incomplete or not at all.

Glad I didn't dismantle the old bed, cos it looks like I'll be sleeping on it tonight!

You leg it to the shop to get milk and lo and theres the card waiting for you saying you weren't in - it's a conspiracy !

If you could have chosen one current member of the Everton squad to wait in with you, which would it have been? As a follow up question, would you pick the same squad member to break in the new bed with you with an impromptu pillow fight?
 

Joy! The bed didn't turn up. Now having loads of fun trying to get hold of the bed company, who have also gone incommunicado.

So glad I purchased this on my credit card, as I can see a clawback coming up...

Ha, would you believe it. Sales websites should be forced to publish who their courier firms are, so you can assess whether you want to purchase from them. Looking at the reviews (read: complaints), I probably would've chosen a different website to purchase from.
 
Probably have some obligation under commercial law they aren't fulfilling by being unable to check the status of that item. Get them to chase up the freight company for you as they should have some information allowing them to track the whereabouts of the item. There should be someone or somewhere that will tell you what your rights are under uk law as the consumer (perhaps here https://www.gov.uk/citizens-advice-consumer-service). Throw in a few buzzwords like unacceptable service and breach of consumer law and you're all set to have your enquiry fast tracked and chased up by the company.
If they are obligated by law to be able to tell you where your item actually is and they fail to do so, you can then bring it up with the Office of Fair Trading.
