I think you might be struggling to get them to sort out something on a 17 year old out of warranty car. Nothing wrong with trying but I wouldn't get too indignant if they don't accept responsibility.

What are the issues ?

You may be covered under the Sale of Goods Act 1979 ?

I bought a second hand car a few years back from and independent dealer, with a one year warranty.

Two weeks after I bought it, the gear box blew up. The garage paid for a recon replacement, but not recovery costs.

I'd fully expect a 100,000 mile warranty. Or until it left the sellers forecourt - whichever comes first.

Way too modern for me ... when were they made? 5 years ago?

I was just explaining to a bloke, today, that Metallica's "Ride the lightning" is still new music to me. I hear it first in 1986, so ... what was that about 10 years ago?
