Mrs Caolam and I are taking Young Mr Caolam to York in early March for an University interview, going to stay a couple of days, any advice, sensible advice, on things to do and see or places to go would be greatly appreciated

You can do a tour of York Brewery, I’m going on Wednesday, slight detour on the way back from Huddersfield. I’m also going to the Railway Museum if that’s your kind of thing.

One of my favourite places to go. Loads to do, most hotels and tourist information will have leaflets etc advertising places to visit. Regardless of your religion, the Minster is a fabulous building well worth a visit. Lots of ghost tours of a night if that's your thing too. As mentioned, some great boozer' s all over the place and nice restaurants, a particular favourite of mine is a lovely Tibetan place called The Yak and Yeti !!

What Kling Klang said basically. I took a school group on an exchange there for about 5 years. Just wander round the alleyways, have a pint down by the river. Do the city wall walk. The ghost walks are a fun way to see a bit of the city even if the stories are not your thing, costs about 3 quid and you'll see signs near the Minster. Some nice pubs, especilly around the chocolate museum square (can't remember the name) there was a great pub that I can't remember then name of, really thin bar room downstairs, but had upper levels with armchairs and the like.

Also, the Eagle and Child pub by the Minster has a table in one of the windows on one of the upper floors. If you can reserve that for dinner you get a great view of the Minster lit up at night, although there are better places to eat.

My niece (from Hertfordshire) started at York last year. My sister has stayed up there a couple of times since so I'll ask her.

My wife's family are from Yorkshire, and my paternal grandparents are from Hull, so we're keen to visit too. It may be warmer down here in South London but compared to the North of England it's boring and less friendly.
