I plugged a newer laptop into the modem the other day that had just had a full reset & was getting 218mbs through a wired connection, so at least I know that I am getting what they say now.

this arl thing via wifi gave an 18mbs reading at the same time wirelessly (other about 65 wirelessly).

Is it that different between wired and wireless? Our BT is pretty much the same, I never use wired.

Thanks for the info. Do you use VPN?

I'm currently with BT broadband and never had a single issue with them to be honest, but it's now gone up to £50 just for the broadband (download speeds of 67mb). We have Sky tv full hit but that'll be going up to full price next month, and BT is out of contract. So Virgin media seemed a natural solution if it works as they say it does. We don't actually watch much live TV bar the sport so, toying with the idea of just jibbing it all, but I need the broadband, especially for work. So ideally it'd be reliable.

I only use a VPN for work, it’s a Cisco hard token, works fine for me, the last 2 jobs I’ve had have been the same Cisco VPN system and it’s worked fine. If you’re using a different type of VPN then I don’t know if it would work

That really depends on a number things; which wireless frequency your router is able to output (5GHz vs 2.4GHz), if your device is able to receive 5GHz, if 5GHz is enabled (sometimes its disabled by default), how far your device is from the router and how much interference there is.
I get 104Mbps download using wifi on a 170Mbps package using a cheap £5 adaptor from

quoting a laptop that runs on vista & then a much newer 1 on windows 10 that had just had a full reset, wirelessly you are restricted by the speed of your laptops wifi, with a cable they should be able to run at full speed. Thinking of running a cable upstairs for my lads gaming 1 cos he moans he doesnt get full speed.

Make sure you run cat 6 copper STP cabling. Cat 5 will only support speeds upto 100mb/s whereas cat 6 can support speeds upto 10000mb/s.

Also distance is a pre-req as 100m is your max cable length for both cat 5 and cat 6. Dunno how that will affect you in case RBOG?

100m ? I'm not sure if that will reach to my poolside Cabana down the end of my 1/4 acre ?
