Videos from Donovan's first loan stint?

Wiki tells me he scored 4 in 8 games while on loan. We couldn't beat mighty Fulham to his signature or didn't want to?

Tremendous record, in a much lesser team.

He also hit double figures in a few seasons for Fulham in the top flight.

He did it regularly for years at the highest level.

For me, demonstrated more to his game at the highest level than Donovan.

i thought it wasn't as Clear cut as that - he was such an asset for the mls they would never had let him go for the price we would have been willing to pay for someone of his age?

Did we ever actually make an offer? Tough to sign when employed elsewhere.

We wanted to sign him, he didn't fancy it.

In an interview with the New York Times, Donovan said:

"I’m a very loyal person. I had promised Tim [Leiweke, former executive with A.E.G., which owns LA Galaxy] when he was here and Bruce [Arena] that I would come back, in exchange for letting me go there.

"And although things changed and they wanted me to stay, and there was a lot of potential talking to be done, immediately I said, ‘Thank you, but I promised that I would come back, and I want to go back.’"

I think what we learned about Donovan during his (first) retirement explained why he didn't want to sign permanently. Landon is a very introspective sort and shortly after he came back to the States from his second loan at Everton, he took a break from soccer to deal with depression.

I think California is a huge stabilizer in his life, like a safe space. Maybe it wasn't so hard for him to come to Everton on loan because the change in environment was offset by the short-term jolt of getting to test himself against some of the best players in the world. But if he had signed here for a few years, thousands of miles from everyone he knew except for Tim Howard, I think he might have been swallowed up by his own head and not been as effective.
