Sorry if there is already a thread on this but I've looked back and couldn't find one.
Basically I want to give my thoughts on this and why I don't like it. I watch a number of games throughout Europe and as you may know VAR is now in use in various leagues. Now there was a particular example of it's use which has totally put me off it and that follows..
The match is Sporting Lisbon v Estoril in the Portuguese priemiera liga. Sporting big favourites on home soil and Estoril have just got a goal back to make it 2-1 in the 85th. Estoril are pressing for an equaliser and Sporting have an attack on the break, they break down the right and the winger Crosses and the keepers in no man's land as Bas Dost beats the defender and heads into an empty net. The crowd go crazy as Sporting secure the 3 points the linesman runs to the Half way line waiting for the restart of play and the Sporting players are elated walking back after their celebrations.
However some time after the goal, the referee suddenly hears in his ear a mention of offside in the build up, the referee then puts his hand up in the air and disallows the goal after the players and the crowd have celebrated and texted their mates to say they have gained the 3 points. The sporting boss is furious and so to the players and fan, however replays show there was an offside in the build up so the decision is correct.
3 minutes later Estoril press for the equaliser, they have the ball on the outside of the area and a perfect dink into the box is played and the striker unleashes a perfect half volley into the corner of the net. All eleven players are celebrating like never before, the linesmans flag is down and they run Into a huddle and are ecstatic with the most unlikely of comebacks. They have salvaged a draw at a very difficult opponent with 2 late goals.
As they walk back for the restart with just 2 mins to go, suddenly the referee stops, he hears something in his earpiece. Oh no surely not again? Yes it is another offside in the build up, the estoril players can't believe it. The sporting fans celebrate like they have just scored a goal. It is in fact another correct decision.
Now here where I stand on this, the emotion of a game of football has just been totally thrown here there and everywhere by VAR, yes it's the correct decision on both occasions, however the beauty and emotion of the game has been totally ruined in this scenario. On both occasions the on field officials gave the goals and it took well after both teams celebrating to disallow the goals. It took around 30 second to a minute on both occasions. Although the decisions were correct it really did ruin what we love about the game.
I'm sure others don't agree with my thoughts on this, but I think unless if it's more instant then VAR just isn't good for the game.
