Just wondering if any of my GOT family can help me with a wuery on Van Hire's.
My work has asked me and my Uncle to hire a 7.5 tonne with tail lift, the idea is to drive from Liverpool to Brentwood/London to pick up Office Furniture and Boxes of papers.

The companies i have enquired about all say we need a Operators License for the trip. If we only move houses for example then we dont ?!

Any idea how this works and what i can do to avoid the operators license problem ?
Also any good van rental places in Liverpool ?

Thanks Guys You are all Beautiful people.....

If it's just a one off can't you just pretend it's for a house move and then use it for whatever you want?

http://www.suttonmaddock.co.uk/faqs FAQs on there say pretty much what you said in that you need an operators licence if it's being used for business purposes.

I deal with a company in Brentwood on a daily basis, if they are any indication of what Brentwood is like then you might want to swerve the trip altogether anyway.

Dress it up like the Coca Cola truck, stop along the way for people to pose and take photos, profit from the trip and deliver your stuff.

You're welcome buddy

I've hired a van several times for moving house, but the largest I've ever been able to hire is a Luton Van. 7.5T lorries are substantially bigger than this, and I expect you need some sort of HGV-lite license for them.

If you're using the truck for hire and reward purposes - which is your intention, then you'd need an operators licence, that's the law.

Dependant on your age you can be legally entitled to drive a 7.5t truck, but only as they say for personal use i.e. a house move.

You can lie and hire the thing, but if you have an accident or get pulled you'd be in deep [Poor language removed]

Nice enough place, Brentwood. I got married there.

can't you just use a luton van with a tail lift

This has been mentioned mate, its more about the weight of the items rather than the size of the boxes etc etc. We would be going back and forth for days on end before we moved all the stuff.

Thank you for the suggestion though !

Wouldn't it be cheaper to have it delivered by a specialist haulage company?

I think the idea was to have someone from within the company do it, simply becuase the files needed to be in order (im in charge of the archiving and moving of the boxes), also i think the bosses thought it would be more appreciated to give the money to their own staff first before bringing someone else in.

It's not far from me but never been, my impression of the place is severely clouded by the people I deal with so I'm maybe being a little harsh.
Oh don't get me wrong, I didn't actually interact with the locals, merely used their facilities and ran home. Nice looking place though.
