Never understood why kill the person quickly?

Throw them in a jail cell, let them rot without food and water. Really make them suffer.

I would lock them in a cell for 24 hours a day.... I would supply them with 1 cup of water a day and 2 slices of dry bread 3 times a day.. enough to survive for a long time but in a very sufferable way.... they can of course refuse to eat or drink and end their misery sooner... that's a choice they have which they never gave their victims and when actually faced with the reality of death 99% of humans will grasp any straw to stay alive...no matter how miserable the existance.

Would you please, just please stop making blanket assertions that have NO basis in fact like "despite every piece of evidence suggesting the opposite."

I'm fairly confident it wouldn't take me long to find "evidence" to easily and factually rebut assertions such as that.
