2-0 up in the Copa America Final against an utterly toothless Paraguay side with less than ten minutes to go. They should be about ten goals clear, to be honest.

And, assuming they don't utterly collapse, they'll have won the tournament 15 times, one more than their closest rivals Argentina and seven more than Brazil. I've said it before but if you add that to their two olympic golds and their two world cups, it's an astounding record of success for a country with a population of only 3.5 million.

That's about the same ammount of people as Wales has and less than such footballing powerhouses as Ireland, Togo, Croatia, New Zealand, Norway, United Arab Emirates, Scotland and Costa Rica.

And they'll do it in Buenos Aires too, which will make it doubly sweet.

Society in Latin America produces the footballers, for a great many that actually make it, it is the one route out of the ghetto/off the streets they have. The places you mentioned tend to produce athletes in other sports such as swimming, rugby, golf, cycling, cricket, track & field, winter sports for Norway. So the comparrison isn't entirely just.

Well if it's entirely about the culture name one other country in Latin America with a comparable population and a comparable record. Hell name one other country in the world with a comparable population and a comparable record. There simply isn't one.

The second smallest country to win the world cup by population is argentina's 40 million. That's more than 11 times the size.

Forlan is my non-Everton football hero. With Zlatan being my non-Everton antihero.

Anyway, congrats to Uruguay, who are a truly remarkable footballing nation.

Forlan was an amazing tennis player before he started playing .. .. . Soccer
