I currently have 4gb or RAM on my computer but it is getting more and more sluggish. When I (for example) play Football Manager and use Firefox and listen to music via MediaMonkey it really struggles, the fan comes in, the computer sounds like it's about to take off and it's a nightmare to use.

A RAM upgrade should make some difference, right? I am thinking it would be cool to upgrade to 8gb. Is it likely to make a big difference?

My CPU is a dual core 1,80 or something. The laptop itself is about 1.5 years old, however I am a bit worried the motherboard won't be suitable for DDR3 RAM...

Komputerbay 8GB (2x 4GB) DDR3 SODIMM (204 pin) 1333Mhz PC3 10600 8 GB - CL 9

Thanks for any advice!

DDR3 1333 is overkill for the proc in your laptop as it only has an 800Mhz FSB, so you might save a little money by just getting DDR3 1066. Other than that the only thing that's really going to possibly speed you up is replacing your HD with an SSD.

Download CPU-Z and find out the speed of the RAM already in your system. If you plan on adding 4Gb, no point in getting anything faster than what you already have. If you intend on pulling out the 4Gb and slapping in 8Gb of new stuff, follow GSG's advice.

The difference is a couple of quid, not worth bothering with all that when the better RAM will just run at the same speed anyway

Depends on the deal he can find...I'd go with 1066 at a better CAS rating. For what he's complaining about his RAM really isn't the limiting factor anyhow, not at 4GB.

BTW Butters, adding 8 GB is pointless if you're running a 32-bit version of Win 7...you didn't specify what it was.
