Drug addicts, alcoholics, gamblers, most of us either know one, have suffered because of an addiction or know of peoples lives affected by them, but what causes the problems, is the environment they live in, upbringing or illness?

All of them contribute mate. There's no definitive answer.
I guess there isn't, I just find it interesting how even within the same families you can get one who goes off the rails and others don't, even though they have the same upbringing/opportunities

Lol, I've got two lads. One is an absolute little weapon and thinks the world evolves around him, the other is a pleasure to be with - human nature mate .

Upbringing and environment are generally considered together as 'socialization' and the usual debate is Nature (Biological hereditary) vs Nurture (Socialization), the more modern approach is that it's a mix of both and it is extremely complex, consider the 'middle child syndrome' or 'short man syndrome' (also known as Napoleonic complex), there are such a multitude of factors that influence our psychological state that to some extent it's pointless trying to understand it at all, a lot of modern behaviours that we consider 'negative' are really only negative in relation to our society, which itself is a product of social engineering, I had a friend who had all 3 of the behaviours you mentioned, and he ended up in all the usual help groups etc, but essentially his perception of 'society' was that it was inhumane and unnatural and that 'playing by the rules' was against his beliefs so getting off his face and squandering his wages were some kind of rebellion (from his perspective). Self destructive behaviour is inherent in us all, if it wasn't why would people have children? :)
