Like many of you I’m self employed and unable to work with the corona virus at the moment, has anyone else tried claiming universal credit? I’m currently on hold with them 1 hour 42 minutes and counting..... I tried ringing 20 times on Wednesday and the line went dead every time ! Has anyone had anyone had any luck getting through?

If you are self employed you will get 80% of what you didnt tell the tax you were getting.

Yeh that’s another one il be constantly ringing up for, not available yet though as they have to set the system up or something...

HMRC will write to you for the S/E cash mate. As for U/C, iirc, you can start a claim online. But like someone said, speaking to a real person was very tough before all this. Heaven only knows their staffing levels as well.

...yep, Mrs has been retired a few years but was JC. UC can be started on-line, but ultimately involved interviews via the DWP JC. I understand they only have a skeleton staff at the moment and assume the process is being streamlined to get monies out.

As others have said, pre covid you would usually be waiting about 40 mins so I’m guessing now you’ll be lucky to get through at all. I’d try very first thing in the morning.
Another byproduct of this virus is that people are now actually seeing just how messed up Universal Credit actually is. Imagine trying to make a claim if you can’t read or write, or have crippling anxiety or aren’t computer literate. Hopefully when the dust settles on all this people will remember.

Multiplied by 10 if you have never needed the benefits system, other than stuff like child benefit.

Its a mystery.

Got through eventually after the 2 hour mark, then he recommended I try to claim a different type of income called new style ESA (something to do with national insurance contributions).... guess what I need to make another phone call tomorrow

You have to speak to someone on the phone at some point as you can’t have a interview in person with the corona virus outbreak

The interview is at their place. Unless you are unable to leave your house/get there, for medical reasons. And that was when the world was normal. Christ knows how they are doing it now.

Thats what the missus was told to do last year. Its not means tested, and back dated. £75 a week, paid every 2 weeks, lasts 12 months.

Everything is done online with the DWP you register your name online at Gov website they process it then they will make an appoitment to see you which will be sent to your universal credit journal don't waste your time using the phone lines
