Awesome, lid.
HAPPY GHANAVERSARY!
On this day, two years ago, in the city of Natal in Brazil, the USMNMNMNMNMNT broke the Ghanaian curse with a 2-1 win in their opening match of the World Cup. Dempsey and Brooks with the goals. And now, two years later, those two will be back in the lineup for another high stakes matchup verse Ecuador in the quarterfinals of footballing’s biggest cash grab ever.
Thanks to some pretty nutty results in recent matches, we, somehow, someway, WON THE GROUP! WOOOOOOOO! Thanks for that, Fightin’ Oviedos. Ironically though, there was no prospect of the feared quarterfinal vs Brazil anyway, as the Incans came down from the Andes and reasserted their dominance of South America for their first time in a few hundred years.
No matter, we’ll take the side we bested in a friendly a few weeks ago. That’ll do nicely.
It’ll be a tricky one. If Paraguay were CONMEBOL’s better version of Honduras, Ecuador are CONMEBOL’s better version of Jamaica. They’re fast, and the US defense, which has been stellar thus far, will be put to the test, and they’ll be without superpacey Yedlin after he saw red in more ways than one vs Paraguay.
Orozco is expected to take over vs Ecuador’s very capable Jefferson Moreno. Orozco has previous experience playing against the Swansea man during his days in Mexico, but it’s clearly not as ideal of a matchup as having Yedlin.
And I’ll be honest, I haven’t heard of a single one of their players outside of Moreno, so I don’t know why I’m hedging. We’re the mighty mighty USMNMNMNMNMNT, and apparently, as of about a week ago, WE’RE BACK BABY.
INTO THESE.
THE YANKS ARE COMING.
