Awesome, lid.
Hoooooooly cats sorry for the late one folks. Pub league game ran late, but we've won 3 on the trot now so it's all good.

When I first saw who our opponent was I had to do a double take. Turns out Cuba pulled one past Guatemala and sneaked their way in to the knockouts.

Cuba?!

CUBA?!

Wow. Crazy tournament so far. Four Caribbean nations in the knockouts, two of them being group winners.

Take it away, Michael Bradley:

2015 Gold Cup: Jack Warner's Revenge.

Normally the only noteworthy thing noteworthy that happens for Cuba at the Gold Cup are the defections. And true to form, they've had 4 of 'em so far this tournament. Four players just up and left the Cuban roster, including their top striker Ariel Martinez.

Yikes. Charleston Battery manager Michael Anhaeuser must be making his rounds.

Cuba head coach Raul Gonzalez announced on Friday during the team’s press conference ahead of Saturday’s quarterfinal against the US that Martinez, who played every minute for Cuba in the group stage, left the team after their 1-0 win against Guatemala on Wednesday.

According to a Univision report, Martinez had tears in his eyes on Cuba's bus following the match and “ran off into the darkness” once the team got back to their hotel.

In all seriousness for a moment, it must be gut-wrenching for the Cubans. To play in a country where your sport is a very distant second fiddle to baseball, and to be cut off from so many opportunities to follow your dream to being a successful professional football player. All of these defectors have had to make the very serious choice between staying with their families or following dreams, and that's a choice that no person should ever have to make. Let's hope that US/Cuban relations continue to thaw that future Cuban footballers will be able to follow their dreams, stay united with their loved ones, and represent their country. Truly, they deserve better.

I have no idea how the Cubans are going to look here. All of their players come from a very closed off Cuban domestic league, and it's hard to ever see them in action outside of brief international appearances. They'll be our easiest competition of the tournament so far, and hopefully we'll be able to break out of our slump here and put away a team nice and easy, like we should've done to all of our opponents so far this tournament, but have failed to do yet.

Couple notes, we've got some squad changes. Jozy is out. Good stuff there, he's been far from his best. Greg Garza and Alfredo Morales have also been sent home. None of them have been having good tournaments, so good decisions all around. In come Joe Corona, Alan Gordon, and DaMarcus Beasley.

Beasley, back out of international retirement to answer the call. He played his first senior international match in 2001. Fourteen years ago. An unsung USMNT hero.

[Poor language removed], kickoff, let's batter this lot okay? Please? Go go USA.

GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOL.

God do I love watching Spanish language broadcasts.

Hilarious the empty seats here. Today's double header in Baltimore is the US and 3 Caribbean countries.

When you book an international footie match in Baltimore, you're banking on having some Central American nations since there are large populations of El Salvadorians and a few others in the area. And it's not an area known for it's strong USMNT support. Couple that with the extreme heat and here we are.
