Awesome, lid.
So if I may have said in the last preview that Colombia put away with ease the minnows but can’t raise their game against the sharks, what does that mean for a side that couldn’t touch them until the 70th minute, and even then was lucky not to fall further behind?
What? No reason. Just asking for a friend.
Erm, yeah. Between that, the fact that Fox Sports exists, and that the Copa America is a weird place to announce that Chile has annexed Uruguay, not the greatest start to the tournament. But, thankfully a listless Costa Rica 0-0 Paraguay means we’re still very well alive. For a few more hours, at least. Calm down Alexi, it’s gonna be alright.

Next up are the Slothkings of CONCACAF, the 0.5 of the 2.5 teams on CONCACAF, and the home of Everton’s own OVIEDO BAY-BAY!!! Who, as coincidence would have it, has a new baby! Congrats Bry Bry, and welcome to the world Martin Oviedo Loria.
D’awwww.
Anyway, enough sentimentality, on to the footie.
To have any realistic hope of advancing to the knockouts of our own bloody tournament, this match is a must-win. And we should win it. Los Ticos are by no means a bad side, but they’re off their 2014 World Cup peak and without their world class keeper Keylor Navas.
The 2016 Costa Ricans play an ugly-but-effective style of counterattacking footie. Optimists would call it three at the back, but anybody who actually watches them would call it 5-4-1 with 3 central defenders and two wingbacks. Capable but not great players Joel Campbell and Bryan Ruiz will try and catch us on the break, but if the US defense didn’t allow any goals from Colombia in the run of play, then Costa Rica shouldn’t be a threat. Also diving. The love to dive. So much. They’re like snorkeling footballers.
Paraguay was able to snuff out any semblance of a Costa Rican attack by pressing hard and forcing CRC keeper Pemberton to punt it to the midfield, where Los Ticos aerial weaknesses were exposed. The Paraguayans also showed how tough the Sloth’s defense was, not being able to put together much of an attack themselves.
We do have the personnel to crack that nut, but as has become tradition one has to wonder if Klinsmann will make the changes necessary to do it. Dempsey’s slowing pace and lack of defensive work should mean he goes to the bench, and Nagbe and Pulisic deserve a chance to start, but I’m done trying to make sense of Der Skipper’s tactical decisions.
Alright, enough words. I don’t want to get emotionally attached when the inevitable happens and I have to watch the rest of this tournament as a neutral.
THE YANKS ARE COMING!
