Awesome, lid.
And now the tournament truly begins.

It goes to show how good this team COULD be when we bossed 2015's Group of Death without the offense ever really clicking. A stout defense only allowed one goal in three games, and grit and tenacity took care of the rest. Seemed a bit trepidatious at the time, but now that it's all over... Well, that wasn't so bad, was it?

Next up is a trip to the oil-stained fields of Edmonton, where we'll meet Colombia. The South American sides, Las Cafeteras included, aren't exactly the dominant powerhouses of the world they are in the men's game, but they're still capable of some dirty, nasty footie, as demonstrated in the biggest upset of the group stage, Colombia 2-0 France. They imposed their game on the cheese eaters and made a side that many have picked to win it all look surprisingly pedestrian.

Then again, they were hardly inspiring when they drew a decidedly average Mexican team and lost to an above-average-but-not-great English side.

So, we've played better sides at this point, but at the same time the Colombians have shown their up for the fight. Just gotta make sure Lady Andrade doesn't try to punch Wambach again.

Not a good look, m'lady. Not a good look.

And apparently they feel "disrespected" by us Yanks... Even though nobody has really said anything negative about them...? With Colombian star Yoreli Rincon saying that we've "belittled" them and that "They don't have the heart we Colombians have."

When asked which comments specifically she was referring to, Rincon said that "wasn't very relevant at this point."

Yeah, okay. Whatever. Remember to pay tribute to the drug lord when you get home. Ya beaut.

So let's hope for a defense that stays firm in the back, for Rapinoe to keep bossing the middle of the pitch, and hopefully a wee tiny bit more creativity in the final third? We can dream, right?

This will be the last "easy" match of the tournament for us, as long as it's not our last match. China awaits the winner in Ottawa, and it only gets uglier from there on out.

THE YANKS ARE COMING.

How did USA, Germany, and France all end up on the same side of the bracket? Favor to host nation Canada?
