Sometimes it's apt, but too many people forget that this is a profession to these people, not necessarily a passion, as it is to many fans.
Assou-Ekotto won a lot of points for me by basically saying "I don't really like football, I don't watch it, I don't enjoy playing it, I don't think of my team mates as anything but people I have to spend time with, I don't even know who we're playing until the manager tells me most days. It's just a job to me and one I try to do well in purely for professional pride." I can respect that.
I think it's the combination of the lack of honesty, you know the way players always pretend they actually love the club and often blatantly lie about their future intentions, and the huge huge sums of money that annoys people. I mean Ashley Cole saying that 50 grand a week is insulting or whatever.
Mind you, Charlie Mitten got basically hounded out of the game just for daring to try and earn a living back in the 40s so I'll take the mercenary culture over that.
