Unexpectedly brilliant acting

Actors who have surprised you with a performance you wouldn't expect.

1. Clare Danes - Temple Grandin. Clearly the basis of her Homeland character. One of the best acting performances I've ever seen.

2. Jim Carrey - The Truman Show. Think it was his first straight role after his goofy films, what a performance.

3. Nicholas Cage - Adaptation. Really broke his typecast on this one.

I think Tom Hardy is great in Inception

He does it in a grounded enough manner that for a split second he almost convinces you that this ludicrous premise could actually be happening

Ryan Gosling - Drive.

I personally didn't think he had much to do in that. Just walks or drives around. Stays silent. Occasionally mumbles something. He is an ok actor, don't dislike him but think that role would be a breezed for mot actors.

My one would be Elizabeth Olsen in Martha Marcy May Marlene. Didn't realize she was one of the Olsen twins until after. Loved that movie.
