It has been apparent to me that in recent games, particularly in the absence of Darren Gibson, our midfield has been lightweight, especially from a defensive perspective. The central defenders have been regularly left exposed due to lack of protection, with opposition runners catching us on our heels all too often. This was evident versus Southampton,Wigan and now QPR.Just look how easily Neville was shrugged off by Hoillet, leaving the entire midfield open for him to gallop into. I think Osman and Neville simply aren't strong enough, nor do they have the lungs to hold down the area between the boxes, and we have missed this in Gibson's absence. Also,I think Mirallas is looking increasingly a luxury in these circumstances, especially away from home.He is careless with the ball, surrenders possession all too readily, and clearly doesn't like physical contact. Until Gibson is back,I would sacrifice Mirallas from the starting 11, and select Heitinga in front of Jags and Distin, giving them some protection. With Fellaini back fit,I think we have enough offensive options with this team option, drawing on Mirallas from the bench should we need to.
