i asked her indoors and her answer is thus (translated from ze deutsch):

ffs, you're still on that forum?? obviously we in Europe would more miss British musik as the Brits are quite content with their english-speaking culture and don't often look to foreign-language stuff. I mean, which Brit would willingly listen to Helene Fischer?

so there you have it...for reference, this is Helene Fischer, Germany's biggest pop star:

The world is a much finer place for Rammstein's "Rosenrot".

Time for some sweeping generalisations.

Rock = Tough to choose between the US and the UK. If you prefer the heavier stuff you might lean towards the US but if you like old school rock then you'll probably give it to the UK. EU belongs in the bin.
Hip Hop = US annihilates everyone although currently UK Hip Hop is probably truer to Hip Hops original routes than the autotuned mumble rap which now dominates in the US. EU again belongs in the bin.
R&B = Easy US win, UK second, EU...
Jazz & Blues = US wins again, UK very distant second, why am I even bothering with EU at this point ?
Electronic Music = UK win with EU finally putting in a top effort as well. The US played a pioneering role in the formative years at an underground level but it never took off in a big way until the mid-late 2000's when it go rebranded to yanks as 'EDM'. The US takes a hard L here.

Overall the US wins on depth of genres but id perhaps argue that the UK's peaks are higher. EU is good for obscure pretentious electronic music and not much else.

betraying lack of knowledge about european musik there. french hip-hop is massive, eastern folk is huge part of the culture, 70's german rock influenced so much britrock/pop.

there's brilliant Romanian bands that arwnt known outside romania the vote is going to be UK as most people are from UK here.

But you wouldn’t for one second argue that these are somehow ahead of the American or British equivalents.... which is the entire point.

Im not saying that Europe has never made anything good in genres outside of Electronic music, just that when you compare it to the impact the US and U.K have had on music it’s not much of a competition.

I did say it was a post of “sweeping generlisations” as well

Haha yes, where would we be without the likes of this... lol :p

Seriously though, there's loads of quality european music that I imagine most brits are completely unaware of as it's not in English.
