Does anybody else believe they should have never changed the Uefa Cup to the Europa league?

I remember when we were in the Uefa every team made an effort and people actually wanted to win the trophy. Now people just field their reserve teams and would rather not be in it.

What are your views?

Yeah it should still be called the UEFA cup, but almost every league apart from ours fields full strength teams, for some reason our country thinks it is too good for the competition

Well it is a some sorta B or C grade champs league. If mentioned this often times but the current system that has same teams having playoffs for CL and EL and then CL teams dropping out going to EL makes the whole thing a bit cheap. UEFA doesn't show the competition any respect so it's harder for others to do.

Because the money from league positioning in our domestic league utterly dwarfs the Europa League to the point that it loses all relevance.

That, and the competition itself is completely devalued by the structure of allowing Champions League "losers" to drop in towards the end. Meaning you could play a full strength team through the group stages, knacker your entire squad and then come up against Real Madrid in the knock out stages.

Added to that the fact the competition itself has less prestige than the FA Cup these days and you have a myriad of reasons why it should be completely disregarded.

I couldn't name you the last five winners of the Europa League, but I could name you the last five winners of the Copa del Rey. Says it all.

That's a moot point because a) the same teams win the copa del rey every season b) you might have a real interest in spanish football and c) i can name the last five winners of the norwegian cup so that is irrelevant

The clubs need to start respecting it more before UEFA do, I'd much rather that we won the Europa League than got 4th and potentially not even get to the CL groupstages

I don't. I don't live in Spain; I have a passing knowledge of Spanish football based on watching Sky Sports games after the English games.

I fundamentally disagree with you. It has to be made relevant by rule changes and financial incentive to make clubs become interested - it isn't the imperative of the clubs to care.

For example, if a TV show is terrible, people won't watch it. It's up to the makers of the show to improve it so that people do watch it.

The gap is too wide. The CL money needs to be reduced and transferred over to the Europa League so that the difference is around 70/30. Because as it stands, the Europa isn't worth it at all unless you make the final.

I do agree that the prize money needs to be altered and some things need to be changed but I think the clubs also have to manage it themselves too. The TV show is a good analogy but I don't think it's completely the same thing because its a different scenario. Something official has to change though. And yes the winner should be rewarded with CL football

Id rather see winners of a cup in it than whoever finishes 4th in the league. The premier league has essentially become a qualifying round in its self.

If it was up to me, it would be the same format as it was during the 80s, the winners of the leagues and the holders go into the CL and everyone else goes into the Europa and it's all knockout (we'll ignore the CWC for now even though I wish they'd never binned that one).
