Two Yellow Appeal Rule

I'd assume it wasn't possible to appeal against a suspension incurred as a result of two Yellow cards (unless mistaken identity) but;

Watford have been successful in their appeal against the red card shown to Matej Vydra against Middlesbrough at the weekend.
The striker was sent off two minutes before half-time in the 2-1 defeat at Vicarage Road after being shown a second yellow card for an alleged stamp on Nicky Bailey.

Hornets boss Gianfranco Zola indicated after the match that he would appeal against the decision and the FA have upheld his view.
The 20-year-old, who is currently on international duty with the Czech Republic,

will now be available for the clash with Peterborough on 20 October.

Can anyone clarify?

In the case of a red card that was shown after two yellow cards, the player is dismissed and receives a one-match ban without the right to appeal, excluding mistaken ident.

It was mistaken identity though. The ref thought it was Pienaar when really it was The Invisible Man.

That's the rule as I know it but that example Dan has found flies in the face of that. Very odd.

Unless the article is completely wrong and he was in fact shown a straight red.

As with a lot of FA rules and regs, full clarification is tough, but my understanding is that a card can be appealed on the basis that the Ref made a mistake in his awarding of the card. The obvious example would be mistaken identity.

So, if, in the Refs opinion, the 2nd card to SP was justified, either due to the actual challenge made, or as a result of "totting up" several fouls, (remember, he was spoken to after his 1st card), and an obvious mistake was not made, might be a tough call.

The problem is that 2 yellows might not really add up to a straight red, in terms of the seriousness of the two offences, but 2 yellows equal Off. End of. Might be wrong though as several (successful) appeals have proven.

Considering how much it wasn't a foul, I wonder if it could be done on the grounds of bringing the game into disrepute. We won't appeal though, cause he got away with the earlier foul...it was his own fault, in the end. He was given the benefit and then got caught out, such is life.

I understand them not wanting to have to deal with appeals over every yellow card, but surely when it results in a red(which can't be that often) there should be right of appeal.

We could appeal the Rodwell red in the derby that wasn't a foul and got it rescinded, yet we'd have been better off if Pienaar got a straight red today rather than a booking for soemthing which didn't even appear to be a foul.

But thats the rules and its the same for all teams.

To be honest Piennar was a tit today and it was only gonna be a matter of time before he walked..... ffs if we could see that from home surely Moyles could have picked up on it earlier and subbed him .... he just didn't look right all game for some reason.
