two-legged play-off?

Nothing has changed but the name. And we the teams have to play 2 more games than the Champions League teams....and Champion League teams still fall into this one.

Aye, but usually 7th wouldn't result in Europa League qualification, would it?

What would be the case if only 5th and 6th qualified for the Europa League? Am I right in assuming there would be an advantage to finishing 5th rather than 6th if we hadn't reached the FA Cup Final? - If thats the case, it seems we have done both Villa and Fulham a favour.

I think so. By winning the european qualification due to the FA-Cup we got the slot there. If, say Tottenham, had won the Cup. Then they and us (due to our 5:th spot) would go directly into teh first round and AV had to qualify.

so even finishing 5th means we have to play a play off ?

bloody typical , uefa have probably set it up that way so they can pick and choose which teams to con out of the competition early.

ie , theres defo a uefa conspiracy against english clubs and if they can swindle any of our teams out of europe before any money rolls in ......they will.

Maybe finishing 5th means we're seeded to play one of the lesser sides and we won't get a Villareal or Standard Liege this time!

Seeding depends on the team coefficient so where we finished in the lague wouldn't have anything to do with it. Only international competition games goes into that figure.

Me too mate, so much so that my research a day before the final League game away at Fulham indicated qualification to the Europa League stage would be guaranteed if we finished 5th. I looked at wickipedia and UEFA.Com before and after the Fulham game only find the qualifying rules contradictory. Maybe UEFA still dislike Everton FC which would be a shock to me, NOT!!

Well... It is.. by finishing 5:th we entered the competition without qualify for it in the last qualification round.. but the same would have been true if we finished 6:th. But only due to the fact that we reached the final in the FA-Cup and got an european ticket that way.

I am just not understanding this mate, really. Last year we finished 5th yet where drawn against Belgian Champions Standard Liege, knowing our luck we will be drawn against more difficult opposition this coming season. UEFA need to get their house into order, they seem to reward failing teams, ie allow Champions League drop outs into the Europa League at a later stage, yet dont reward club sides that finish highest for qualification.

The reason we got drawn against Standard last season is the simple fact that they had such a low coefficient so that THEY weren't seeded. We got the worst possible opponent we could have gotten.

Each team in europe that draw a game or win one will get some more points to their coefficient. In addition to that they will give a smaller amount to the national coefficient that all teams from their country benefits from. Since England have 7 teams in Europe each season they have a fairly high base coefficient, Belgium have a low one. That ment that even though Standard is a good team they got a low coefficient due to they coming from Belgium.

Brownies glass is half full, but in order for it to stay full, we will need lots and lots of players.

To be honest, if we had qualified last season I reckon we would have got to the final. Our full strength team, with Mikel in the mids runnin tings, easily as good as most of Europe.
