TTIP

I've read a fair few articles on it. Some are relatively relaxed about it (levelling more at corporate).

Others tend to suggest we're selling the family silver. Either way, I can't see it being good for the majority of the population.

Before you dismiss TTIP as something "good" for "our" economy, watch "Life and Debt," a documentary about how America swarmed into Jamaica, seemingly as a beneficial force, and economically raped the joint.

(The link is a "director's voice-over" version. Please seek out the original - it's a life-changing film)

Or you could listen to Bruce, of course.

It does.

Legislation is law. A treaty is not itself law it causes new laws to be written to implement the treaty.

Massive difference.

In effect? So the treaty dictates policy across the adherents? The massive difference is to those looking for legalese, the upshot is that this creates a complete new dynamic, legally, across trade, leaving 'consumers/voters/public' out of the process.

I would say that is pretty drastic, enough not to get entangled in the semantics of wordplay. A means to an end. Stuff and nonsense.

Legaleese is all about word play and semantics.

You're completely out of the process. Out of your depth.

The EU has already said it won't water down existing safety or environmental legislation. What they're looking for is harmonisation. A process for it.

Competition is less of an issue as existing national and EU trade law already applies to the likes of the NHS. Allowing member states to be directly involved in healthcare provision.

Ttip opponents are hysterically arguing against something that will not happen anyway. ie complete adoption of a US healthcare model

Its not legislation. Its a trade deal.

Correct and that makes it even worse.

Go and look at the resolution mechamism in the case of dispute and you will be shocked.

This deal would supercede both UK and EU law and in the case of dispute would be resolved in a completely unaccountable Washington based tribunal.

Then look up the record of the tribunals and see how frequently they find favour with US corporations.

Then look up the value of the claims awarded in favour of US corporates and compare that to claims awarded against.
