I believe it has been widely reported that the idea for concentration camps was a result of the effectiveness of those the British used in the Boer war. None of these things were relatively knew though. It had been going on for the entirety of civilization.

He used to devour the pulp novels of German writer Karl May ; he wrote, amongst others, books set in the Wild West featuring an Apache chief. There was a radio programme about it which was quite interesting.
